... although we try. Today someone brought up the study about how there are more c-sections happening then ever before. Some of this is due to doctor's not wanting to risk malpractice suits; some due to increasing obesity rates & the increased risk that brings; and finally some is due to women wanting to schedule their lives better and control when nature says "go". Now I'm not sure what percentage of women pick out of their or their doctor's convenience when to give birth, but I do know I had a violent reaction to the thought that people do choose to do so.
Full disclosure, I am one of those who would not even want to know the gender ahead of time. No, I don't live in the dark ages and I do partake of recent medical advances, so yes, I guess I am a hypocrite. My defence is that I do believe in using technology to combat things which have gone wrong & pregnancy is not a problem to be managed, in my book. Intervention as needed, amazing and a gift. But going in and interfering when not absolutely needed is hubris. My doctors and I work to get me off meds, not add to the list. We work to help my body naturally solve her issues through diet, rest and exercise. We help her when she's weakened while trying to bolster her. We see her weakness as a sign of something being wrong, i.e. not enough rest or too much stress or bad eating habits.
Why talk about this on an environmental blog? Because what we do to our mini-biosphere, our body, reflects what how we treat the larger biosphere. Do we listen to the wisdom of her cries? Or do we try to intervene and put nature on a human time-table answering to only our needs?
