Do you want change? Do you have a choice? Do you embrace change as the only steady-state? Over the years I have used art, science, protest and other tactics to get people to see that we need to change. That we need to go against the grain and follow a better path. A path that sees beauty in decay, imperfection and differences. A path which does not dictate that each apple shall duplicate the one before it. A path that does not say all lawns and teeth shall be straight, perfect rows. Cookie-cutter homes and lives shall be declared boring and bland. Why? Because all of this striving to "perfect" the world is destroying her and us.
We've been marketed to and sold a series of products. Things that we "deserve" and "need".... things to make our lives easier and better... or so they say. Diversions from real peace, real beauty, real experiences. False promises that we pay for, over and over again.
Last week I graduated with an MBA in sustainable business. One of the speakers called us all "change agents." Challenged us all to go out there and help people to change, to help them conquer their fears of change. Personally I learned pretty young that change is natural. Plants grow up, flower and then die. The cycle repeats. I love the edge of change.... whether emotional or physical. The place where the grass grows through the bricks or where the ivy takes over the wall. A person realizing the walls he thought were around him can and should come down. Comfort in change; security in movement. Stagnation or feeling like one cannot change/grow/move = death.
